Meet April White
Home for Haida artist April White is both Haida Gwaii and Powell River – where she grew up and still owns a gallery and screen printing studio. Being born on Haida Gwaii her heart will always be here and she is surrounded here by her many close and extended family members. Re-living an experience that was part of the everyday lives of many of her ancestors, April recently paddled on a traditional Haida canoe journey from Old Massett – where she’s originally from – to Bella Bella. It was a deeply meaningful and symbolic journey.
Through her art April expresses and eternalizes her deep connection to her ancestral home. Even when she began painting, in places far from what she describes as her spiritual home, she found herself painting Haida Gwaii. “It’s as if I am experiencing innate memories that connect me deeply to my cultural past,” she says. “It’s as if my brain is really doing the seeing, not my eyes. The feeling of this cerebral vision is supernatural, and magical.”
The role and passion for art in April’s life is integrated into her two bed and breakfast homes, Eagles Feast House and Haida Gwaii Lodge, where she displays and sells her work. She creates much of her work at her studio at Eagles Feast House, where guests often find her at work and where she encourages interaction.
As with her art, hosting guests doesn’t feel like a job. She finds a great deal of joy and fulfillment in entertaining and likes to hear guests’ stories, which are all unique and important. “That’s the bonus of running a B & B rather than a hotel,” she says. “It’s far more intimate. You get to know people on a different level.” In spite of being busy with her guests and spending a lot of time painting, April tries to make time to connect with nature as much as she can. Beach time is prime time, and she loves to paddle whenever she gets the chance.
Original. Relaxing. Spiritual.
