Meet Kaylene MacGregor & Mike Picher
Chef Mike Picher moved from Victoria, BC to Haida Gwaii several years ago to work as an Executive Chef at a local restaurant. He left his partner Kaylene MacGregor behind in Victoria for what he thought would be a temporary situation. But Mike quickly grew to love Haida Gwaii, and so Kaylene joined him after a couple of years. Both have adapted nicely to the casual pace of Haida Gwaii living and particularly love the spectacular scenery. One of their favourite places to spend time is on the beach and, thanks to their two active dogs, they take long walks along the ocean almost every day.
Kaylene also had professional restaurant experience, and when she arrived in Haida Gwaii, the couple began talking about the idea of opening their own restaurant. They started out with a leased operation outside of Masset, and eventually purchased property and a building of their own in town, a former bed and breakfast, and renovated the entire building, doing much of the work themselves (including the hand-crafted bar made from re-purposed cedar). Their hard work paid off and they finally opened Charters Restaurant in late 2013.
Mike and Kaylene are excited to be using their restaurant experience and skills in their own establishment. Mike is the Executive Chef and takes a great deal of pride in the quality of the food that they serve. “We are food-driven and that’s what we focus on,” says Mike. He cooks everything from scratch from recipes he has developed himself. He uses a lot of fresh, local seafood and exotic meats like bison and duck, and they offer an extensive selection of extraordinary wines. Tourists often comment that the food is as good as that of fine restaurants in big cities. For Mike and Kaylene, it makes all of the risk and their considerable efforts worthwhile.
