Meet Shellene Van der Beke
Haida Gwaii has a long and well-known history as being a community of residents who go out of their way to help each other out. Shellene Van der Beke started Haida Gwaii Trader in February 2010, in part, to make it easier for locals to connect with one another when needs arise. Not only has it helped residents and tourists to find items to buy, sell or trade, it has also provided a common voice for businesses who want affordable, effective advertising options that speak directly to the people of Haida Gwaii. “Our business model is based on community service,” Shellene says, and that is one of the reasons it has become a trusted source for local commerce.
In fact, Shellene feels privileged to be able to serve her community in such a tangible and practical way. A lifelong fan of thriftiness, Shellene operates HG Trader as a natural expression of her belief in the value of being frugal in a way that benefits everyone.. “There is no better feeling than travelling around town and being stopped in the street by folk reporting stories of how HG Trader helped them to sell their vehicle, find real estate, fill a job position or even find their lost wallet or cat,” Shellene says.
One of the things she most enjoys about Haida Gwaii living is the fact that you can’t go very far without seeing and waving hello to people that you know. She also appreciates the clean air, the space just to breathe and the amazing natural beauty of Haida Gwaii. “We’re all so lucky to live here!”
Results-Oriented. Affordable. Rewarding.
Thousands of items have been bought, sold or traded on Haida Gwaii thanks to the HG Trader. The monthly publication contains classified ads as well as real estate for sale or rent, plus a listing of community events. The HG Trader magazine is published monthly, sells at 15 different retail locations and can also be viewed on Facebook as an e-zine.
