Meet Joelle Rabu & Kathy James
Joelle Rabu is proud of her role as Haida House Manager, a business that is overseen by the Council of the Haida Nation (Hai-Co). Hai-Co was formed in 2009 as an economic development foundation, and its goal is to provide meaningful employment and skills training for people of the Haida nation. The business is a very cooperative effort between Hai-Co board members, hotel staff and the Haida nation as a whole. “Everyone wins” including guests of Haida House, who regularly rave about the friendly service, the amazing setting and the culture that makes up Haida House.
Tourism is a fast-growing industry on the island of Haida Gwaii, there are many excellent businesses providing accommodations, including a number of quaint, locally-owned B&B establishments. With so much breathtaking scenery, we in the tourism industry anticipate continued growth over the next decades. Joelle is also quick to note that Haida Gwaii is a wonderful place to live too. “There is a sense of community here,” she says. “We like being able to know our neighbours.”
