Meet The Sandspit Community Society & Manager Flavien Mabit
The Sandspit Visitor Centre began as an initiative by the Sandspit Community Society. The Society is made up of volunteers, including a board of directors, with a passion for showcasing everything that Moresby Island has to offer to visitors. Flavien Mabit is the manager of the Sandspit Visitor Centre and is the face that most visitors see when they stop in for information about Moresby Island and Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site. Flavien always embraces the opportunity to talk to people about what makes Sandspit so unique and special.
Flavien is an artist who chose Sandspit for its access to untouched and unspoiled nature, a source of inspiration for his artwork. Flavien is devoted to the community and its small handful of friendly residents. Sandspit has a “relaxed feel” to it, says Flavien, and residents take time to get to know one another and say hi when they meet on the streets. It is an atmosphere that he tries to recreate within the Sandspit Visitor Centre for those who stop in.
Like most of the people who have made Moresby Island home, Flavien loves the beauty of Haida Gwaii’s outdoors. The Gwaii Haanas area is particularly pristine and breathtaking, and Flavien spends as much time as possible walking the beaches and hiking in the forest.
Informative. Friendly. Relaxed.
Make sure that your visit to Moresby Island and the “Gateway to Gwaii Haanas” begins at the Sandspit Visitor Centre. Here, visitors will find information about what to see and do in the area, including the world-renowned Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site. The Sandspit Visitor Centre staff members are locals with intimate, firsthand knowledge of the area, its culture, peoples and heritage, plus local events, like the Moresby Market. In addition to information about the region, visitors are invited to spend time in the gift shop and take home a souvenir to commemorate their visit to the region. The Sandspit Visitor Centre is part of the official Tourism BC Visitor Centre Network and is operated by a not-for-profit community society.
