Meet Andrew Finnie & Jay Thompson
Andrew Finnie, a former city dweller, moved to Haida Gwaii upon meeting his wife. It was the perfect moment to give up the metropolis hustle and bustle for a relaxed, easy-going lifestyle. Since arriving in Masset, the Finnies have had two daughters and love it. “Haida Gwaii has the things that really matter in life,” explains Andrew.
Jay Thompson was looking for a lifestyle change as well. In 2009 left Tsawwassen for a fresh start in Haida Gwaii. Jay raves of the cohesiveness of his amazing community and how the wilderness intersects through every aspect of island life. “The wilderness spaces are the most beautiful in the world and the cultural wealth spread throughout is outstanding,” Jay says.
Andrew and Jay met through their children. The pair quickly bonded over their love of coffee during their weekly dad and daughter play dates. It all started with roasting beans in their kitchen ovens, experimenting with different techniques and flavours. It wasn’t long after ordering their first counter-top bean roaster before the pair began their business endeavour.
Creative. Eclectic. Original.
Elephant Cage Coffee Roasters provides islanders with ethically-sourced beans roasted locally. Featuring medium and dark roast blends and single origin roasts for all occasions, the guys behind the roasting have it down to a science.
Every batch brings out an intricate balance of aroma and complexity. One can taste the difference in each blend, featuring variations in acidity and sweetness. There is a roast for every type of coffee drinker. Whether you’re a connoisseur, a slow and savouring sipper, or a get-up-and-go kind of coffee lover, Elephant Cage Coffee Roasters has something for everyone to enjoy.
“Nothing makes us happier than making a cup of coffee that people enjoy drinking,” says Andrew.
