Meet Erica Ryan-Gagne
Erica Ryan-Gagne was one of 350 First Nations, Metis and Inuit Canadians to be invited to take part in the Indigenous Youth Gathering at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Guests were able to participate in a variety of events, including dancing in the opening ceremonies. But one of the biggest highlights of the event for Erica was a plenary session on youth entrepreneurship. Erica was so inspired by the words of the keynote speaker that she decided right then and there that she was going to start a business in her hometown of Skidegate. By summer of that same year she was taking esthetics training, and launched her own business the following autumn.
Today Erica is the mother of two young children. Her business has grown by leaps and bounds since she first started. She moved out of her one-room, in-home studio to a brand new, dedicated studio on her property. Erica worked like crazy to get to where she is, and she credits some wonderful organizations for helping her to be able to expand over the years. She won a $5,000 award in the Northern Savings Credit Micro-Loan Contest several years ago and used the money to expand her studio. She has also received a great deal of support from the local First Nations community.
Above all, Erica believes she would not be where she is today if not for the community of Skidegate. Erica has very loyal customers and has been strongly supported by the local business community. Erica is proud of her beautiful, inviting studio and the quality of the services that she provides. She is especially grateful to be able to work her business around the demands of motherhood and to be able to be near her children in their younger years. Erica would like to give special thanks to Haida Gwaii Community Futures for helping her with her first and now second commercial loan to grow the business.
